Optometry students observership realities.

Every student pursuing bachelor of optometry is excited and keen when it's 5th semester of their college,  they know it's posting time and they will get to  observe the job they will be doing after few years .   Students are posted according to their roll no and divided in groups are distributed in different departments in eye opd  .

When It was my first posting , we were posted by our college authorities  in a nearby eye hospital, Venu Eye institute & Research centre .  We were so overwhelmed with joy that no more theory,  it's time for some practical exposure .     We undergraduate optoms expect "observership" to be a new change in life were we will be observing patient , doing workup and performing refraction like a pro in just few days .  Expections and reality are actually two side of coin .

Reality was nothing close to it. Getting up early morning , getting into formals , grabbing the most important thing called lab coat and rushing to the hospital is the just first part of the day .
After that if you have been posted in private set up then have a heavy breakfast so you should be strong to stand on your feets for whole day ! . The decorum of private opd should be maintained like you maintained when principalsir was across the corridor

let me discuss some do's and dont's during observership if you are in private set up.

DO'S

  • REACH ON TIME.
  • SANITISE YOUR HANDS
  • LAB COAT SHOULD BE NEAT CLEAN AND ALWAYS PUT  ON INSIDE THE OPD.
  • KEEP QUIET AND OBSERVE THE EXAMINATION.
  • ASK PATIENT CONSENT BEFORE TOUCHING HIS FOREHEAD/CHIN OR BEFORE ANY PHYSICAL CONTACT TO HELP IN EXAMINATION.
  • ASK ANY DOUBT TO THE OPHTHALMOLOGIST / OPTOMETRISTS WHEN THERE IS NO PATIENT .
  • LEAVE ON TIME OR AFTER TIME .

DON'TS

  • NEVER FORGET YOUR LAB COAT
  • DO NOT TOUCH ANY MACHINE WITHOUT PERMISSION.
  • DO NOT ARGUE WITH THE PATIENT
  • DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS IN BETWEEN EXAMINATIONS
  • DO NOT USE SMART PHONE IF NOT NECESSARY
  • DO NOT DISTURB THE DECORUM OF OPD .

            JUST STAND AND OBSERVE.

CHARITABLE OPD ARE ON OPPOSITE HAND ARE LESS STRICT AS COMPARED TO PRIVATE . THIS DOSEN'T MEAN WE CAN DO WHATEVER WE WANT , IF YOU ARE A HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL YOU SHOULD KNOW TO MAINTAIN THE DECORUM OF A HOSPITAL.

CHARITABLE OPD HAVE A BENEFIT THAT THERE YOU CAN BE EASILY  DOING WORK UP , AR , NCT IF YOU LEARN IT IN FEW DAYS OF OBSERVING .

I PERSONALLY RECOMMEND CHOOSE  A HOSPITAL WHERE THERE IS A CROWD OF PATIENT AND NEARBY YOUR AREA . BE PATIENT IF YOU ARE NOT GETTING TO PERFORM ANY WORK UP,  OBSERVE HOW IT'S BEEN DONE FIRST ,  GO STEP BY STEP .

OBSERVE HOW EVERY SINGLE THING IS BEEN DONE WITH FULL CONCENTRATION , GO THROUGH DISCHARGE FILES , OBSERVE WHICH TYPE OF PATIENT ARE MAJORLY COMING , WHAT IS THE MOST PREVALENT EYE PROBLEMS IN THAT AREA AND MANY MORE MINUTE THINGS CAN HELP YOU BUILT YOUR CONCEPT.
