Kala motiya - the silent thief of sight!







When we hear word “moti “ we all-get a quick picture of pearls in our mind and it pleases us because it’s beautiful.  We have a positive response when we here it but this response differ when “kala” word is used as a prefix. Look If I say you have got  pearls( Moti) , what will be your reaction?  
 
Duh! You will be on cloud nine . But if a doctor says you have pearls then  he adds kala to it , like he says you are having “kala motiya “ you get perplexed after his sentence.  So now how to react ?
What on earth is this “ kala motiya “?

 






Hear me out ! 

 

“Kala motiya” is a punjabi/hindi word for Glaucoma. 

I am sorry my dear you are suffering from a very common eye disease that can lead to total vision loss . 

 

It totally differ from “safaid motiya “ i.e cataract . Cataract is disease is related to our crystalline lens . 

 

 

Let me tell you some basic GLAUCOMA  causes :

  • Damage of optic nerve 
  • Raised IOP
  • Hereditary 

 

Types of glaucoma: 

  • Primary glaucoma - no underlying pathological cause , there is only anatomical predisposition 
  • Secondary glaucoma - underlying pathological cause i.e intumescent lens, iris, neovascularization initiates the angle closure.  

 

 


Your optometrist will take all the necessary visuals acuity ,AR , NCT and APPLANATION  tonometer, OCT , fundus angiography , humphrey visual field . He will keep a record of your eye health and serve you the best he can . He will do all the pre and post medication test and make you aware of your condition. 

Diagnosis procedure 

 

  1. Visual acuity - the status of vision .
  2. Slit lamp examination - examination of anterior segment .
  3. Nct and applanation tonometry-  checking IOP. 
  4. Goniscopy -  checking drainage channels.
  5. Humphreys visual field - when damage in optic head nerve and rnfl .
  6. GDX - nerve fibre analysis .
  7. OCT - nerve fibre analysis.

 

 

Some common anti glaucoma drugs you will get to know - timolol, betaxol, pilocarpine, latanoprost, dorzolamide etc your ophthalmologist will direct you the correct prescription according to severity . 

 

Treatment 

  • Goniotiomy  
  • Trabeculectomy - when gonitomy not possible due to corneal clouding.
  • Standard technique - trabeculectomy + pharmacological agent+ anti metabolite .

You need to have routined check up . Your optometrist/ophthalmologist will take a record of your IOP and give medications , treatment according to the type of glaucoma you have.
